The Tools4Work Level 1 resources are intended to provide secondary students with a well balanced, practically orientated mechanical engineering course that develops lifelong skills, stimulates self-esteem and confidence, and generates a sense of a pride in paying attention to detail.

The Tools4Work Level 1 resources enable students to achieve the Competenz Level 1 National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering Technology (NCMET). The NCMET qualification is designed for secondary school students interested in engineering processes, with potential for careers in mechanical engineering and related trades.

The Level 1 NCMET qualification leads on to further engineering studies with the Level 2 NCME unit standards. School students can achieve the Level 2 NCME unit standards with the Tools4Work Level 2 resources.

Achievement of the Level 1 NCMET qualification is an excellent preparation for Gateway programmes and engineering apprenticeships, and will demonstrate to prospective employers that the student has the skills required to commence employment in their industry.

The Level 1 NCMET qualification is based around the following compulsory unit standards;

  • US 22923 Demonstrate basic engineering skills under close supervision

  • US 22924 Develop a simple product using engineering materials

  • US 22926 Demonstrate knowledge of safety procedures in a specific engineering workshop.

These compulsory unit standards also incorporate the following skills and knowledge;

  • Basic workshop safety procedures

  • Basic engineering workshop techniques including: cutting, marking out, measuring, joining, assembly and finishing

  • Use of basic tools and machinery

  • Investigation, design and building of a simple product
